The Oklahoma Democratic Veterans Federation strongly supports the election of Tom Sutherlin to Oklahoma House District 64. Drafted in1969, Sutherlin completed US Army NCO Leadership training at Fort Johnson – formerly Fort Polk, and Finance School and specialized training at Fort Benjamin Harrison before his tour in Viet Nam with Headquarters Company Special Troops, USARV as a Specialist 5. A very meaningful part of his Viet Nam experience was volunteer service with the Thu Duc Orphanage system.

Tom has been actively engaged with the Lawton/Fort Sill community’s large Veteran population. As a professor at Cameron University, he taught numerous Veterans and active- duty service members, relating well to them as on who had “been there, done that.” He was an active volunteer for the homeless Veteran stand downs held at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawton, resolving computer issues for a program which had special security needs.

Already fully aware that Veterans and military families need and deserve access to quality healthcare and educational opportunities, Tom Sutherlin continues to engage with the community on these issues, focusing on the question of whether Oklahoma Veteran Agencies, Oklahoma Veteran Centers, and local medical services are fully meeting the needs of Veterans and military families. When elected to office, he will continue to ask the question, “What else should we be doing?”
